Becoming Muse
Now before her stood the door to the Great Machine - The Universal Cog. Her loved ones were in a white chamber behind. Tenenger turned and walked to the threshold. There they all were, looking as they chose. Her father and mother, Finch and Bane, all of her Captains, Jack and Colb, Octavius and Keal. A few grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her uncle and some of his family. They smiled and waved at her and she stepped into the room to be with them.
"Tenenger." A voice came from the doorway. The Guardian.
She gave her mother a hug and thanked her for all her wisdom. She picked up her grandchildren and spun them around with giggles. She hugged Bane and told him Cordin was doing alright. Her Captains greeted her with smiles and 'thank yous' and as she got to the back of the group she saw Jared. He stood in his officers uniform, they way he had at the gala. She gave him the longest hug of all.
The room faded away and there stood the door once more. Tenenger opened the door. The room within was completely black but she could tell it was a vast endlessness. The a moon slowly formed in the center. The Guardian followed her in.
Above them the eyes of Mecius opened. There was a low rumble, he was chuckling. “You do say no to the Machine after all Little Meadowlark."
“It's not my job to build anymore.” Tenenger looked up with a smile. “My job is now to the living Renovans. All of them.”
“What will you do?” The Guardian asked.
“Inspire.” Tenenger turned to the moon and on the surface she could see the people living there, thought lost. There were the first who had landed and started to build their home. Many were nearing the end of their wills. Their children and grandchildren were not better off.
“I give you a chain to travel.” Mecius spoke and around Tenenger's neck appeared a very heavy bronze chain. “You may use it to move back and forth. You may not use it to help anyone travel. It is your tether between the physical and here.”
Tenenger lifted the chain in her palms.
Mecius rumbled on. “These are the rules. They bind you to this task and if you break or deviate from them, you will lose your memories and yourself. Your spirit will leave this realm.”
She looked up, attentive but not scared.
“You may not interfere or interact with your family line, unless they are here among us. You may not speak of them plainly or inspire their names in those living. To those you wish to inspire, you may speak to them in their dreams and be a bright voice to soften their doubts. You will not show yourself to them.”
Tenenger gripped the chain, holding it over her heart. It would be tempting but not hard to not screw up. They needed her and she needed to show them the way.
“Do you understand Little Meadowlark?”
“I understand.” She grinned and chuckled. “I thought it would be harder than this.”
“You have a beautiful idea, Little Meadowlark. I am happy to allow you this, small selfishness, that you may help others who only see darkness.” There was the sound of a snap and Tenenger felt an energy rushing up around her, peeling away the ‘form’ that she had taken, pulling and dragging at her ‘breath’ and causing a fluttering light within her ‘body’. Flashes of lightning etched across her limbs and over her face and hair but there was no pain or fear. As the feeling faded away Tenenger looked down at herself to see a blue translucence had replaced her ‘body’.
“MUSE.” Mecius’ voice boomed all around them.
“Good luck.” The Guardian saluted and bowed.
Tenenger turned her eyes to the moon. She felt at the chain around her neck and vanished to her first job.
